The stunning Nina Simone (1933-2003) is arguably one of the greatest singers of her generation. Well known for her distinctive alto voice and incomparable renditions of many iconic soul, blues and classical pieces, she was also a politically-minded and vocal activist, penning songs such as "Mississippi Goddam," which became an anthem of the 1960s civil rights movement.
